Wood Ash Industries Inc. (WAI) the parent company of Northern Carbon & Ash Products (NCAP) is presently finalizing research to separate the carbon, ash and reject within the high carbon wood ash with a view to market three product lines - 1) a concentrated carbon alternative 2) fine ash or fly ash and 3) pH Boost a high carbon wood ash product in bagged or bulk amounts. NCAP is well positioned to expand these value added products from its current site where there is approximately 175,000 cu3 of marketable material and will commence a full marketing program upon completion of the separation methods. A marketing study conducted during December 2008 indicated that the wood ash/biochar material is presently a marketable product and was well received by the companies that were interviewed.
pH BOOST
pH Boost is a screened wood ash product that contains approximately 35% biochar. The high carbon wood ash material has the benefits of wood ash and biochar for use in agriculture, horticulture, environmental cleanup and mineral processing. The wood ash is a combination of bottom ash and fly ash and is a by-product of cogeneration where wood chips and bark are burned to produce electricity.
Wood ash is used in the garden or lawn to neutralize acidic soils and correct calcium and magnesium deficiencies. The ash is also beneficial in controlling slugs and odour and is suitable for use in composting. The high carbon wood ash material retains moisture and acts as a bulking agent when composted. It also contains potassium and other macro and micro nutrients that are beneficial in growing crops, vegetables and flowers.
Presently pH Boost is marketed as a soil amendment as per Canadian Food Inspection Agency regulations but will eventually be sold under the trade name Bio-Ash.
