Research & Development

Wood Ash Industries (WAI) has previously conducted many research programs on a joint venture basis with potential end users using both fly ash and mixed ash (bottom and fly ash). Initially fly ash was tested in a paste fill recipe with a local gold mine with limited success. While the wood fly ash did set up and bind, the strength tests did not produce a high enough strength for backfilling specifications. WAI has also conducted research programs using wood fly ash in filler applications successfully. All of the foregoing information is documented and outlined in technical reports, available subject to a confidentiality agreement. During these research programs it has been observed that there are significant amounts of carbon in both bottom and fly ash.

WAI has received approvals from the Ontario Ministry of Environment (MOE) to land apply mixed wood ash onto farmlands as a soil amendment. The Bios lids Utilization Committee, acting on behalf of the MOE, recommended approval, after an extensive analysis and testing program conducted by the University of Guelph.

Carbon Research

WAI has recently focused its research and market development initiatives on carbon applications using mixed wood ash. Several joint venture research programs that tested the carbon content and related applications have established that there is a significance presence of activated carbon. WAI will provide samples for testing programs on specific wood ash carbon applications to potential end users.

Joint venture research and development programs are ongoing. Program criteria are selected by the end user for their own specific needs. WAI offers previous data and experience gained to date to potential clients. Use of wood ash in all research programs will require the release of testing information to WAI upon completion of the research.

Groundwater Remediation - "A Preliminary Investigation of High Carbon Wood Ash as a Low Cost Soil/Groundwater Remediate for Site Clean-ups" was conducted by A&A Environmental Services using WAI's mixed wood ash for groundwater remediation on fuel contaminated sites. The study demonstrated that the high carbon wood ash was successful for this type of remediation. WAI is actively seeking a pilot project and proponent to test and monitor the effectiveness of the technology and is presently working with the Province of Ontario to that end. Presently there are funding programs available to the proponent.

Gold Extraction - "An Investigation into the Degree of Activity of the Carbon Content Contained in Wood Ash When Introduced into a Gold Bearing Circuit Taken From the Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. Mill Cyanidation Circuit" was conducted to demonstrate the carbon activity and resulting effectiveness of using the high carbon wood ash for mineral extraction.
